Joshua Porter’s blog Bokardo: Social Design is always great.  He did a post last week on Gall’s Law:

“A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. The inverse proposition also appears to be true: A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be made to work. You have to start over, beginning with a working simple system.”

My thoughts are this could never be more true than with social media.  I just completed the design and development of a new site and social media community for the Chicago Humanities Festival, which will launch later this summer (more on that later)  As we considered the audiences for the CHF online it was very easy to begin thinking about building dozens of starting conversations, and have dozens of volunteer commentators and moderators and….

Whoa…there has to be a simple proposition at the core that you can build from.  What’s the central idea, that piece of passion that attracts people like magic.  Where’s the magic?
