I agree with you on most points. However, I do think there is still a place for SOME "traditional" media when it fits within the communication strategy. Consumers still will need to find the product or service and the tactic that communicates that MIGHT be some form of "traditional" media in the beginning. We are still having great success communicating directly to consumers/businesses -- but more success when it is part of an overall communications effort that includes traditional, new and social medias. But you can't BS anyone -- the company still has to walk the walk. Or prospects & customers will vote with their feet -- virtual or not. Be big or go home? Be relevant or go home is our mantra.

Congratulations on taking this step. When you lay things out as you have in this blog post, it's hard to believe anyone could consider another way.

I'm part of the first group in Boulder Digital Works' 60 Weeks program. The program focuses on bridging the gap between business, creative and technology. Much of what you've written here is what we spend our days and weeks discussing. The idea is king and making sure it informs strategy, communication and creative is crucial.

All the best.

I think you just laid out the manefesto! This ode to my job description that I wrote and will work on my terms can lead to many things my friend!

I could not agree more especially about the big consulting firms both in marketing and software development programs for companies. They bilk millions upon millions of dollars and deliver nothing but promises!

In the last 10 years I have witnessed 500million dollars be squandered away and put companies further behind and jaded.

I have often said give me 20 $100/ hour passionate, experienced, honest, strategic and stratactical individuals we could think strategically and deliver that same way! Additionally in a shorter period with probably twice the functionality and customer satisifaction!

I am glad @davidtc tweeted about you! Look forward to reading and interacting with you in the future!

Rohn: Yes! I have been in the strategic planning "for good" sphere you're entering for the past 12 years - with a sprint in high tech PR which affirmed my decision to return to my native mien - and can tell you it feels different to do this work because you actually see results in the world and feel your contributions; maybe not right away. But you will see the tide shift. The way people think about something move toward solutions for the good. Best of luck. I expect I'll see the fruits of your new labor before long.
Warmly,

This is an interesting look at what I would call the holistic web. I too have created a consultancy and I hate it when people box me up as "Social". Combining creative with communications, new tools and collaboration with others is the only way to be a success in my mind.

That being said. I do see possibilities for traditional interactive marketing programs. There is a lot being said about the convergent shift, but many companies are not ready and really need opportunities to dip their toes in and start figuring things out.

In the long-haul though I agree with you nearly 100% The social web has implications way beyond that of even communications and marketing. I am working with some private schools right now where the content created by the students and teachers actually becomes the primary driver of PR and marketing. Students have the ability to work with and learn about the new technology while the content itself helps drive attention for new students and more.

I hear all the time how the web has fractured attention and how companies need to figure out how to manage with less income on cheaper platforms. All of this is true, but my feeling is that the web (which is still very young) is unifying. Collaboration across borders, languages and countries has crazy potential. This potential can be leveraged by companies if they approach it with the correct intentions. That is where the paradigm shift needs to take place and where folks like you and I can help chip away and educate.

Congratulations on your new adventure. the "walk the walk" concept you touch on especially resonates with me. I completely buy into the fact companies now have to stop saying who they are, and just live out their principles. People will notice. I look forward to you and the others (Paul I, Joe Rueter, Zeus, etc) help keep the Twin Cities on the front edge of this realignment of marketing/adv/operations/whatever services we're in the midst of.
