Very interesting! I am pretty much over Klout as well – there really isn’t any benefit to any of us…just Klout themselves.

I just signed up today and kind of like it. I am an online writer and having some kind of guideline to see how many people I am reaching is a useful tool.
I understand it will be exploited but that is the nature of capitalism. We live in a free market society and we all have the option to use or not use the resources provided to us.
If we really want privacy we need to delete our online accounts, get rid of the internet and go back to using land lines. I, for one, am not willing to do that.

I ended up on Klout by accident. I don’t know how it works. I don’t get why my scores go up and down and why adding my personal Facebook friends will enhance my influence–I already influence my friends. Checking my score is part of a ritual I play in the morning while waiting for my coffee to cool off enough to drink. I hope the VCs lose all their money.

Klout is a very strange beast. It tells me I’m ‘influential’ about things like robots, cricket, money and “octopus”. And when the things I talk about are books, writing and publishing. Obviously in the Klout-dimension I’m a marine biologist (I specialise in octopuses… octopi?) who plays cricket on the weekends and I make LOTS of money–and I know how you should spend it: robots!

And since their using their inaccurate information for the powers of evil?

Very tempted to delete.

Thanks for the info. They seemed to have changed how one gets rid of their Klout profile though. Now in order to get rid of it you have to go to:

klout.com/corp/optout

FYI The option to delete your account has been removed from the profile settings page.

Graham. I believe that creating profiles of people who haven’t signed up is a tactic to drive traffic to Klout to sign up, yes. So if you’re not signed up and you want to delete your account you have to sign up with your Twitter or Facebook credentials, then delete the account, then go to Twitter or Facebook and un-authorize Klout as an app. Pretty sleezy, yes? Well, it gets worse. As of this morning Klout has disconnected the “delete your account” function from “profile settings.” So the only way now is to apparently write them angry emails until they delete it.
